5 Star Review by Mansoor Ahmed ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
"A thoughtful, carefully constructed leadership guide aimed at emerging managers and ambitious professionals in their late teens and twenties who are making the transition from individual contributor to someone others rely on. Finlayson opens with a striking observation: the optimization of physical systems has been extraordinary over the last century, moving from horse-drawn carts to electric vehicles and telegrams to mobile phones, yet human performance has evolved far more slowly. Closing that gap is the author's mission. Across fourteen chapters, he moves through motivation, focus, passion, trust, well-being, competition, digital skills, and the soul of leadership itself, using real-world examples from Toyota's Kaizen philosophy to healthcare workers in the UK, farmers in Spain, and classrooms in New Zealand. Each chapter closes with a "Carrying Insights into Practice" section, reflection exercises, and a "Why Bother?" section. Questions are designed to make the material stick, rather than simply being read and forgotten.
Andrew Finlayson writes with a calm, confident authority that feels earned rather than assumed, and the prose has a warmth that makes the book more like a mentor's conversation rather than a textbook. The pace is good and steady, and the chapters are not repetitive; they build on one another. I was struck by his discussion about the role of imitation as a way to train people as leaders, whether they want to or not. The emphasis on trust, accountability, and human potential authentically runs through every chapter. Mindset Towards Mastery is for anyone who has never taken a leadership position and is asking themselves, "What kind of leader do I want to be? "

"Mindset Towards Mastery by Andrew Finlayson responds to a question rarely considered in leadership books: What if the greatest untapped technology in your organization is not artificial intelligence, but the human mind itself? The author argues that we have spent a century perfecting systems, machines, and processes while ignoring the optimization of human potential. His new book offers a framework for closing that gap, which is exactly the defining leadership challenge of our time. With fourteen generous chapters, he guides readers through the quiet power of imitation, the psychology of motivation, the multiplier of passion, the discipline of focus, and the currency of trust. The thesis of this book is disarmingly simple yet meticulously and rigorously developed: performance is cultivated, not engineered, and leadership begins with mindset and not with title or tenure. Weaving behavioral science, from McGregor and Taylor to Herzberg, with vivid stories drawn from factories, farms, hospital wards, and boardrooms worldwide, the author delivers a practical roadmap for anyone ready to grow.
Andrew Finlayson writes with simplicity, focusing on delivering a message in a way that hits home to readers. This book taught me that focus is a skill that can be learned, and not something that we naturally have. The book shows readers how to earn loyalty and to understand the underlying factors that build culture. The author argues persuasively against the hustle culture and points out that failure is the natural rhythm of learning. I loved how the author champions empathy for the unseen burdens people carry while explaining why technology must amplify humanity rather than replace it. Mindset Towards Mastery is essential reading for ambitious professionals making the leap from contributor to leader. New managers and seasoned executives will find plenty of wisdom and insight to build on. What makes the message most resonant is the delivery: a conversational voice, real-world stories that linger in the mind, each chapter closing with reflective questions, and “Carrying Insights into Practice” exercises that translate insight into habit. The result is less a manual than a companion: grounded, wise, and definitely transformative."

"Mindset Towards Mastery by Andrew Finlayson is a leadership and self-development guide about closing the distance between technological progress and human performance. Finlayson begins with the point that modern organizations have refined machinery faster than they have developed people. Motivation theory then becomes the route into his larger argument: leaders need to understand what helps a person keep applying effort. After that foundation, he brings the subject into working life, where fatigue is more than tiredness, and responsibility can make pressure feel lonely. Workplace culture is shown through imitation, as people copy the conduct they see repeated by colleagues and managers. Finally, Finlayson ties mastery to concentration, digital learning, and feedback that helps professional decision-making.
Andrew Finlayson’s Mindset Towards Mastery is a fantastic leadership guide, and a genuinely useful tool for professionals who want performance advice they can apply. The writing is direct and easy to use, and I love that Finlayson gives readers exercises once the teaching has been explained. Recognition in Action is a perfect example. Finlayson gives readers one week to choose three people around them, name one meaningful contribution from each, and then take stock in how each person responds. Honestly, this would work within a family too! I also liked the call centre example involving Mark, a customer service agent whose warm greeting helps callers feel heard before he finishes with a recap that reduces confusion. Well written and full of usable guidance, this is highly recommended for readers who want better leadership habits."

"Loved it! 😍 No stone is left unturned when it comes to this comprehensive self-help guide for aspirational leaders --- Mindset Towards Mastery is a business management guide by debut author Andrew Finlayson. Targeted towards those who see themselves on the cusp of leadership, this circa 350 page length guide covers a breadth of development qualities across fourteen chapters. Some of the topics covered in this book include, "The Psychology Behind Performance", "Why Attitude Shapes Output" and, my personal favourite, "Balancing Passion with Perspective".
This is a book that truly covers it all. Reading through Mindset Towards Mastery, it is clear that Finlayson has a significant amount of experience in the world of business leadership and his passion for wanting to support future generations of leaders shines through on every single page of this book. The formatting and cover design have been done to such a professional standard this guide would seamlessly blend in on a bookshelf with other books of this genre. To this end, credit must also be given to the designer Alan Hebel as a notable contributor.
With regards to the target demographic of this business management guide, Finlayson states in the opening pages that his book is aimed at a target audience of 18 to 30 year olds, but really there is benefit for anyone coming to this book fresh, regardless of age or background. All you need is an open mindset. Chapters are neatly chunked up into different topics (as mentioned before), which are structured by a section of guidance (issued by the author), fictional case studies and then finally a recap of what the chapter has covered, including introspective/reflective questions for readers to ask and challenge themselves by. In terms of chapter layout Mindset Towards Mastery very much ticks all the boxes.
Mindset Towards Mastery is not a book that anyone should come into expecting to skim through in an evening, more it is a book to devote time and space to truly give it the commitment it requires. Those who do will be rewarded greatly."

"Andrew Finlayson’s Mindset Towards Mastery delivers a practical guide for leaders and ambitious professionals and anyone who wants to lead, not just others but themselves. The book is designed to help leaders build conscious leadership. The author discusses what it takes to awaken personal potential through motivation. He explores the power of imitation and how to build and sustain focus. The book details the multiplying power of passion, the gift of trust, and the place of well-being in leadership. It is about bridging the gap between human ability and the excellence of machines and innovative technology. Finlayson skillfully shows readers that potential is not restricted to the gifted few but is accessible to any person willing to do the hard work of examining their mindset, habits, and relationships. The author blends psychological concepts with insightful and engaging stories to take readers from where they are to where they want or should be; equipped, able, highly performing, and resilient.
Andrew Finlayson’s leadership book focuses on human-centered performance. The author cleverly expounds on the conviction that people outperform processes and that loyalty is not demanded but earned through genuine connections and trust. This book underlines the value of rest, wellbeing, and balance as the underpinning factors that drive sustainable success. Mindset Towards Mastery presents messages that resonated powerfully with me, especially the fact that failure should be perceived as normal and instructive. The book also highlights ethical competition as “co-operation” and the fact that technology should not be a barrier but a bridge to inclusion. The writing is superb, and I loved the vignettes, including Aaron’s quiet loyalty, Gabriella's policing milestones, and Zach's ambulance shift. With the recurring “Why Bother…?” prompts, questions to support the intended behaviors and habits, and “Carrying Insights into Practice” for each chapter, this book is a tool for both personal and leadership transformation."

"To be a good leader, it’s important to stay committed to your goals and maintain trust with others. When leaders take their colleagues’ opinions seriously and express themselves clearly, work becomes more enjoyable. We can all be leaders; we just need to improve the way we think and interact with the world around us. Andrew Finlayson’s Mindset Towards Mastery helps us do that. In this guide, he teaches us how to motivate others effectively, adapt to our environment, and overcome everyday distractions. In this way, he shows us that real change begins with ourselves and that we are capable of facing any challenge.
I really like Andrew Finlayson’s writing style because he focuses on values such as loyalty and empathy, using clear language and relatable examples throughout the book. That’s why this guide is useful for both those just starting to lead a team and leaders with extensive experience. I also found Andrew Finlayson to be a person of integrity because when he talks about overcoming challenges, he does so with the common good in mind. For example, when explaining motivation, he says it’s not just about planning rewards or punishments. True motivation flourishes in a team when everyone feels that their contribution matters. Also, he understands that many challenges aren’t due to a lack of ambition or ability, but rather to the fact that everyday life drains our energy. So he explains how to adapt to those circumstances. Mindset Towards Mastery shows that leadership begins with the way we think, act, and influence others."
